Sunscreens
GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR SUNSCREEN
Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes prior to going outside and reapply 20 minutes after being in the sun. You should reapply every two hours, and after swimming or heavy sweating. It takes about one ounce (about a shot glass full) of lotion to cover the entire body. "Waterproof" sunscreens last 80 minutes in the water, while "water resistant" sunscreens last only 40 minutes. Reapply if you will be in the water for longer periods of time. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to the ears, back of the neck, and exposed areas of the scalp. Sunscreen products can lose their potency over time. Throw away any product that has changed color, dried up or has changed consistency. While it's important to remember sunscreen when preparing for outdoor activities, it is best to use sunscreen every day. Experts have found that the daily application of a sun protection product is your best defense against skin aging and cancers.
WHAT ABOUT SUNLESS TANNING PRODUCTS?
There are a number of products available that claim to give you a suntan without the sun. These products contain an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. DHA works by darkening the top layer of skin by staining it. This process is not harmful to the skin and gives the appearance of a suntan. However it is important to remember that a suntan (from a sunless tanning product or from the sun) does not protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays. Therefore, you must still use a sunscreen to protect yourself.
KNOW YOUR SKIN
While these steps will help to prevent skin cancer, it's important to check your skin periodically for early signs of cancer. Check yourself from head to toe in a well-lighted room, with a full length mirror and a hand held mirror. Don't forget to check all areas of the skin, including the back, the scalp, between the buttocks, and the genital area. If you notice a spot that is changing in size, texture, shape or color, you should report it to your doctor. By checking your skin regularly, you will become familiar with what is normal for you. It may be helpful to record the dates of your skin exams and to write notes about the way your skin looks. If you find anything unusual, see your doctor right away.
